    The Waterloo Region Free List
    By Catherine You | September 11, 2010

There really is a lot going on in Waterloo region. The number of festivals, concerts, arts events, conferences and other interesting things going on can be overwhelming. And yet with a population nearing the half million mark, there are still too many events that go under-attended, and too many people who don’t get out to enjoy what this region has to offer. Well now you really have no excuse. On a monthly basis I’ll be telling you one thing you can do for free. One event, one outing or one activity that will get you out of the house and involved. My job is writing about something interesting in an interesting way. Your job is to go out to do something fun in the community. Sounds good?

    Free Culture:

There was a time not too long ago that going to the symphony was only for rich old men with funny moustaches who sold insurance or did people’s taxes. Classical music was seen by many as inaccessible, and even for those who enjoyed the music, the price tag of attending a performance was far too steep. But as more and more people are discovering, classical music can be affordable, dynamic, modern and even fun.

These days, orchestras are coming up with great new ways to have a wider audience, both by offering exciting concepts and palatable ticket prices. The Kitchener-Waterloo Symphony has really taken this approach in the recent past, with interesting shows fusing with themes like films, holidays, and even food. In fact, they will be kicking off this season with an event that brings together the symphony and the circus. What could be more fun that the circus? And they’re giving the public a free show as part of Culture Days. The Cirque de la Symphonie Preview, will feature circus performers performing fantastic feats to music played by the KW Symphony.

Culture Days is an annual event held to raise the awareness, accessibility, participation and engagement of all Canadians in the arts and cultural life of their communities. All over Canada, artists and will offer free, hands-on, interactive activities. If the circus isn’t your thing, there are thirty other events taking place in the region. Events range from gallery tours to poetry slams.

    Why you should go:
    1. The symphony is one of the most fantastic arts organizations in the region.
    2. The circus is fun.
    3. It’s free.
