  1. W: Drive

A community hard drive to store important documents relating to the Region of Waterloo. Eventually this will act as a 21st century version of a local heritage room (an example being the Ellis Little Local History Room at the Waterloo Public Library).

Starting off, please post links to submissions below or email documents to wdrive@wonderfulwaterloo.com. Please also indicated a specific folder you'd like to store the file in. For example, if you wanted to store RIM's 2009 Annual Report: wdrive/economy/rim/annualreport2009.pdf. We can host documents & images, but not videos at this time, unless the video is short and an important moment in our history. For example 1 minute of the Olympic Hockey Win Celebrations or the Queen's Visit would qualify. Material uploaded cannot be copyrighted.

This is also a new feature so please bear with us as it's being built. Thanks!

Would we have the rights to keep copies of these aerial photos? I'm not much for the legal side of such things.

That's a great link, I'll send them an email asking if they can be included.

I have a few photos I took of Galt that I would be happy to submit. I'll have to send off an e-mail with a few samples.

The Waterloo Drive, aka The W: Drive, is now active: www.wonderfulwaterloo.com/WDrive ; a link has been placed on the upper toolbar.

    The file structure is: www.wonderfulwaterloo.com/wdrive/*.*

    For example:
    [IMG*]http://www.wonderfulwaterloo.com/wdrive/Photos/Skylines/Uptown Waterloo - September 2, 2010 - 3 Resized.JPG[/IMG*]
without the stars produces a photo of the Uptown Waterloo Skyline.

As a group, we'll have to come up with a shared file structure.

    To view the W: Drive
    user: guest
    password: guest

If you would like an account to upload files, let me know and it will be set-up.

Benefit: This fixes the problem of broken links. Last month you might have noticed images weren't being shown from Photobucket, now this issue is solved. The City of Kitchener recently changed their website resulting in broken links, this is no longer an issue if the document is stored on this drive.

Drawbacks (at least for the time being): There's no built-in image resizing tool. For now, you'll need to edit your images (ie. resizing them) before uploading with a photo-editing program (GIMP is free). There's customizing which still needs to be done, for example having a link with img tags. It isn't the most user-friendly software when you want to upload many files at once.

Also if you're interested in testing, we're going to set-up other user-interface programs on test folders to see if one solution is more user-friendly.

Hope you enjoy this new feature!

I just looked on the website and it specifically says "These images have been digitized and are available for public viewing and downloading from this website."

I don't see why we couldn't keep copies ourselves, especially if it comes to using them within thread discussions in WW. Once the WDrive gets more organized it might make for a nice project to move some content over.

UrbanWaterloo - have you heard back from from the University? I agree it would probably be a polite courtesy to ask them first before we take any big steps like I proposed above.

I cannot enter the Wrive room, I need a password and such. Are only mods allowed to go in it?
