The largest running Canada Day Parade in the Country is our very own Cambridge Celebrates Canada Day Parade. The Parade starts at 1:00 pm from the corner of King St. & Bishop and makes its way along King St. and continues on through to Riverside Park for a total of 4 km. Our parade consists of many colourful entries such as marching bands, Shrine clubs. The parade is not without the presence of our military faction. The Canadian Harvard Aircraft Association will fly over at approximately 2:00 PM. There are new entries added each year giving Cambridge Canada Day Parade something worth the watch. This year we are paying homage to the 2010 Vancouver winter games by inviting athletes, torch Bearers, volunteers to attend in the parade.

The evening ends with the live singing of our National Anthem both in English and French.
    This year's performers:
    Romantic Traffic

    Fireworks Dispaly
Location: Riverside Park | Duration: at Dusk for approximately 20 mins
The 36th annual Fireworks Display has been a long-standing tradition here in Cambridge since the early '60s. The setting has always been inside Riverside Park and because it is set near the water, this evening's activity is the most memorable and picturesque part of our Canada Day celebration. At our 2009 event, it was recorded that 40,000 people enjoyed the 24-minute show inside the park, while thousands of others blocked the streets gazing up at the fire in the sky. Note: In case of rain, the fireworks display will be held on the Friday, July 2nd.

The 2010 Columbia Park Canada Day Celebrations.

I don't know what was going on with this tree. It looks like a cannon misfired and put a hole through it.

These pictures were taken at about 9:00PM and there were still people coming in in droves. I would say there were only about 60% of the final number present when these pictures were taken. Not only was the park filled, but people were sitting on Columbia Road and the edge of the University property. I would say this is the highest turnout yet for this event.

    Some pictures of Columbia Lake.

University of Waterloo students plan a Canada Day party for all ages
    UW | Link

The University of Waterloo and its Federation of Students are bringing the region’s favourite community party back to Columbia Lake Fields this Canada Day.

The always popular Canada Day Celebrations organized by the University of Waterloo and its Federation of Students promise to be bigger than ever. This year marks the 145th anniversary of Confederation.

Thousands of local residents are expected to join the university community on Sunday, July 1, at the Columbia Lake Fields on Columbia Street West.

“If it’s a nice, sunny day, hopefully we will get 60,000 to 70,000 people,” said Tessy George, administrative co-ordinator of the Canada Day Celebrations and a second-year student in health studies.

“I’m really excited for the evening, when it starts filling up. People should get there early, though — you’ll want a good spot for the fireworks.”

It’s the 28th year that students have organized the massive celebration. Dedicated student volunteers have worked hard to ensure that this year’s event delivers an expanded line-up of free, family-friendly programming.

Running from 2 to 10:30 p.m., the schedule includes:
    • Main stage performances from 2 to 10 p.m., including pop multi-instrumentalist Nate Hall (6:15 p.m.), five-piece rock band Chalkboard Menu (7:15 p.m.), R&B singer Rufus (8:15 p.m.), and singer-songwriter Scotty James (9:15 p.m.).
    • Children’s stage performances from 2 to 7 p.m., including hip hop performances, storytelling, martial arts, music and more.
    • Mini-Olympics, a Fun Fest, face painting and Activity World for children of all ages.
    • Tours of Brubacher House, one of two remaining original buildings at the University of Waterloo, and a kite-flying display by the Wind Climbers Kite Club.
    • A great array of arts and crafts vendors, and a tantalizing food fair that includes the Canada Day Celebrations food tent, raising money for the fireworks display.
    • Canada’s birthday cake! The official opening ceremony will be held at 6 p.m., and 1,000 cupcakes will be given out.
    • And of course, fireworks at 10 p.m.
There is no entry fee, and all performers are volunteering their time and talents. That means all performances and almost all activities are free to the public.

Parking is also free for the day of the event at all university parking lots, and accessible parking is available at OpenText on Frank Tompa Drive. Grand River Transit bus routes 7, 8, 9, 12, 13, and 29 all service the main University of Waterloo campus, as do the 200 and 201 iXpress routes.

The University of Waterloo Canada Day Celebrations are supported by many local businesses and organizations. Key sponsors are the Department of Canadian Heritage, City of Waterloo, KIX 106.7 FM, Waterloo Region Record, United Rentals, OpenText, Waterloo Printing, J.M. Schneider Foods, 570 News, Domino’s Pizza, CHYM FM, Sherwood Systems Inc. and Waterloo Regional REACT.

I went to the concert at City Hall and it was pretty decent. The turnout actually rivaled some of the larger shows on the Bluesfest main stage. The opening groups were some of the best I've heard and for my money were every bit as enjoyable as the headliners.

However, it was the the worst fireworks show I have ever seen in my life. The show was maybe 3 or 4 minutes long and consisted of someone firing consumer fireworks one at a time off of city hall. Two minutes of Roman candles anyone? The audience actually booed the fireworks show and left people saying "at least the concert was good."

I actually liked the intimacy of the City Hall fireworks, and to call those "consumer" fireworks definitely exaggerates their (smaller) size.

They were fired from the roof of the William's Coffee shop wing, and you got to see some neat reflections of them in the City Hall tower.
