Server Issues
This morning we experienced a server failure. I apologize for the incident, and if it happens again (frequently) we'll change hosting companies.
In the last 2 days or so, I've had a lot of trouble on the site - a page will load reading 'Database Error', or the site itself will not communicate (what they called a 404 in the old days).
It's been quite sporadic - other times the site works fine - but it is certainly an annoyance. Anyone else encountering this?
It's been very annoying, the host provider is working on this and will hopefully have things resolved tonight.
I just spoke with them again and we'll be transferred over to a brand new server by tomorrow morning. This should solve all issues.
Sorry for any inconvenience this has caused.
We're running on the new server now. Let me know if you experience any issues. (Note: There's a few things still to be fixed in the migration process.)
Did the site get too busy for the old server?
I am still experiencing intermittent errors with the site. Usually it just won't load and it'll be available like half an hour later. I experience the problem in both Chrome and Firefox so I don't think it's a browser issue. I forget exactly what the error message is (I think it says Forbidden or something) but I'll copy and paste it when it happens again.
That just happened during lunchtime today, correct?
A few of the settings are still being transferred over which they were working on during the 12-2 window today. I think that (configuration) caused the issue, rather than a systemic server problem (like we were experiencing previously).
Give it a week and we'll see if problems are still occurring.
Yeah it was in that time frame, but it also just happened 20 minutes ago so I'm not sure what the deal is. I'll let you know if there are still problems in a week or so. In the meantime, here's the error if it helps:
"Forbidden
You don't have permission to access / on this server.
Additionally, a 403 Forbidden error was encountered while trying to use an ErrorDocument to handle the request."
Yes I saw that last blip too, sorry about that. What's causing this is simply a configuration error though.
All the pointers had been directed to the old site (69.27.104.121 - Last Post 10-16-2010, 08:05 PM); so when the new site went live all the communication/configuration paths had to be updated to the new address (most of which were done before it went live, but some we're still working on). We're basically re-pointing everything to the new site (the one we're on right now). Hopefully all the settings are updated soon.
This just happened again:
Forbidden
You don't have permission to access /newreply.php on this server.
Additionally, a 403 Forbidden error was encountered while trying to use an ErrorDocument to handle the request.
Apologies this just happened again. It's Sunday evening, so no real managers are in charge at the host (skeleton staff), but I'll be calling them up first thing tomorrow morning with a final demand to either permanently fix this issue (it seems like a very easy fix to me, i just don't have full access to the server since it's shared) or we're switching to someone else.
mysql_connect() [function.mysql-connect]: Host is blocked because of many connection errors; unblock with 'mysqladmin flush-hosts'
I'm fed up with our current host.
Would anyone like to provide suggestions on who WW should switch to? Is there a good local company that understands how to run MySQL?
IMHO, there's no point in trying to host local. Prices are significantly better if you host in the US than even Toronto, Waterloo Region will be worse. Given almost everyone's internet traffic (speaking consumer here) is backhauled at least as far as 151 Front in Toronto before being routed, a Toronto server will have better performance than a local one. TriTAG hosts with Linode in Newark, NJ and we have had excellent performance. The hosting is great and maintains a sub 30ms ping from here (better than WW's current sub 50ms). The catch with Linode is that you need a server admin who can install, configure, secure and manage Linux/Apache/MySQL/PHP. It's completely unmanaged hosting.

It was more just for local pride, however I did call around and the local providers are both too expensive and don't provide good support hours.
We've ended up going with a Virtual Dedicated Server from GoDaddy. The transfer should take place sometime over the next few days. Apologies in advance for any outage it may cause. I'll try to do the switch-over in the middle of the night while most people are sleeping.
Forgive the thread necromancy but I think there's an issue with the URL. I can open the forum just fine but www.wonderfulwaterloo.com won't load for me.
Sorry about this, an upgrade was run last night that mostly only affected the editor. From a technical point of view, I tried it out on both a test site and a live site before processing it here, neither of which had this issue. I've done a patch fix for now.
There are some known bugs with the new editor still, but after trying it out for the last few weeks, I feel it's 2 steps forward 1 step back, in other words it's still an improvement. Everyone has been moved to the WYSIWYG (What You See Is What You Get) editor, but if you prefer to see code you can permanently change that back in your profile, or temporarily in advanced posts.
