  1. How many tower cranes will there be in Waterloo Region in 2010?

    http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/5/58/Tower.crane.bristol.arp.jpg

This is proving to be a banner year for construction in the Region, with many major construction projects anticipated to begin.

For tower cranes, we can already count on the 4 we already have:

    • UW Quantum Nano Centre
    • UW Engineering 5
    • the42
    • Charles/Benton Parking Structure

In addition to these, how many do you think we will have in total???

At this rate we might get close to 8 tower cranes at the University of Waterloo alone. Engineering V (now finished with crane), Engineering VI, (possibly Engineering VII), Math 3, EV3, and the Nanotechnology Building.

    These 6 at the moment:
    • the42
    • Charles & Benton Parking Structure
    • UW Quantum-Nanotechnology Centre
    • UW Engineering VI
    • Balsillie School of International Affairs
    • 323 King Street North
Although we might be up to 8 next month thanks to the courthouse.

Someone should bring a wide-angle high-resolution camera to the WW May Social. It would be neat to capture all five cranes in the City of Waterloo in one shot.

There are 4 cranes in this shot, although I need a higher resolution camera (perhaps something to purchase this weekend).

Sorry to the six of you who voted less than eight cranes. Well not really since this is a good thing to surpass.

    Confirmed (8)
    • the42
    • Charles & Benton Parking Structure
    • Balsillie School of International Affairs
    • 323 King Street North
    • The BarrelYards
    • ROW Manitou Drive Biosolids Dewatering Facility
    • UW Quantum-Nanotechnology Centre | Now Down
    • UW Engineering VI | Now Down
    Maybes
    • Waterloo Region Consolidated Courthouse (2)
    • Westmount Grand Condos - Now that they're 60% sold.
    • Arrow Lofts - Since activity is finally picking up at their site.

Do I have permission from the five of us who voted 8+ to change that option to 9+ (I'm thinking that's probably what most of us intended)?

Also, if none of the voters object, would it be alright if I changed the poll question to: How Many Tower Cranes In 2010? Again this is probably what was intended, as there's been discussion about cranes like Engineering VI which are now down.

This is just to post a clearer photo without the sunset in the way.

9+ would be appropriate since the crane for 539 Belmont is on site now.

I am hoping we see another crane go up at the barrelYards site this building season. That crane they have up looks impressive when heading towards it down Erb st.

So not really about the NUMBER of cranes, but about cranes in general. I've always wondered, for projects that have the crane in the middle of the site and the project is built around it (such as Charles Benton Parking Structure), what happens when the crane comes down? Isn't there then a hole left in the middle of the structure?

Generally it's then used as the elevator shaft.
