  1. How many tower cranes will there be in Waterloo Region in 2010?

    http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/5/58/Tower.crane.bristol.arp.jpg

This is proving to be a banner year for construction in the Region, with many major construction projects anticipated to begin.

For tower cranes, we can already count on the 4 we already have:

    • UW Quantum Nano Centre
    • UW Engineering 5
    • the42
    • Charles/Benton Parking Structure

In addition to these, how many do you think we will have in total???

  3. I picked 8.

On top of what Duke-of-Waterloo listed, I think we'll see a crane for the Balsillie School of International Affairs, Westmount Grand, X-Flats, and maybe even the hotel being built on the Barrelyards site (now that signs of grading has begun).

In a more aggressive estimate, I could have gone with 11 because of 144 Park, the Regional Courthouse (will there be a crane?), and the possibly of seeing work beginning on Centre Block. But that's being very optimistic in a time where the economy is only just starting to show signs of healing.

A notable pattern with the cranes is that they all seem to be concentrated in the City of Waterloo. Since both Waterscape and Heartwood Place don't have cranes, we can't include them, even if they're mid-rise downtown construction activity. There is lots of low-rise and renovation activity going on in other parts of the region as well.

    Great poll idea!!

I went with 8 as well. Duke's 4 plus Balsillie School, Hotel at Barrel Yards, an apartment at Barrel Yards (wishful I know) and the Regional Courthouse.

I originally thought XFlats too, but if its one of those stucco cubes, it won't need a crane.

I'm optimistic that a lot of the condo projects will break ground this year so I went with 8+.

Would Arrow need a crane for the old factory part? Or were you thinking the 2nd phase?

I'm thinking the Arrow Apartment Tower might use one a la 560 Queen Street South.

    Ya they probably would.

Wasn't sure which part of the project you were thinking.

You've got a lot of faith in Auburn huh

It's on the maybes list and the bottom one at that!

  12. Well, I guess there won't be a tower crane anymore at the X-Flats site. Looks like another pre-fab stucco box. Anyone want to change their estimate??

It was raining too much today to get photo confirmation (this week for sure though) but we can add Balsillie School of International Affairs & 323 King Street North to the confirmed list. That's 6 at the moment, how many more will we get?

  14. I think Math 3 at UW will definitely have one. The new university buildings use a lot of the reinforced concrete walls and floors, which require a lot of lifting of cement hoppers to fill the forms.

So what are the odds that at least half of the cranes in the region come from UW

Looks like all of our numbers could be off because of this. According to this DTS report, it looks like there's going to be two cranes on site.

Ya but a number of people thought that the courthouse would have one, so that would alter the guesses
