On the topic of the Breithaupt Block:

There's going to be a Jane's Walk around the area this saturday, 10am.

Mount Hope Neighbourhood: Industrial Past and Post-Industrial Present

    blah | blah | blah | Link

Our walk will begin by examining some buildings that show our industrial past. Some of these are still active in manufacturing but most have been renovated for a variety of post-industrial uses. We will end with an organic farm in the heart of the city which points to exciting future uses of land.

    Meeting Place:
Breithaupt Street in front of the Breithaupt Block
    End Location:
Walk will end at Litte City Farm on Duke St. West (close to Duke and Waterloo streets).

We recently had a photographer go through the space and take some photos of mainly buildings E and C which are nearing completion. The 360 shots really show off the space.

    sexy

    not so sexy

Maybe not sexy, but I live just up the street, and this is actually nicer to walk past than what it was like before. Although it might have been nice to be able to save the small building that had been here, it is pleasant to have a newly-surfaced parking lot and some landscaping by the sidewalk. I don't think they did a bad job at all with the bit of landscaping they did do, actually.

For a surface lot, it's not that bad, brand new.
Though, I do see it as a beautiful multi-level underground garage in the future! (Underneath some attractive office/residential development)

Wow, that is brilliant! Parking lot not so much, but the benefits of this redevelopment far outweighs that negative. Eventually something else will end up on that spot.

It's hard to grasp the size/scale of that space from the photo. How high off the floor are those cross beams? Based on the beams in relation to the windows, I'm guessing about 10 feet or so?

You are correct on height estimate..... Perimeter and Allied will serve Kitchener well with the development of this great facility. An excellent space to work for the creative minds in our region.

They are starting to pick up the pace as far as tennants and prospective tennants...
A Law firm is looking at an entire floor of building C
and a large well known high profile company is looking at the 4th floor of the entire block of C-D-E-F
which someone said is approx 45,000 sq/ft

The old freight elevator in the front of C- building is gone and floors have been built on the 4th and 3rd floors. Old windows in the elevator shaft have now been replaced, which completes the window replacement.
Rumor has it that they are considering adding 2 more floors on top of building A, which will all be black curtain wall.

All good news. If rumour re Bldg A is true, two more floors could make for a building of nearly 90,000 sq ft, which is pretty impressive if it is still the plan to have a single tenant occupy that building.

That's a very large tenant, would be excellent for the transit hub, large flow of people in and out of the area. Another tech firm would be a nice addition to the area.

One thing I've always found odd about this project is that there isn't a clear, direct connection between it and the future hub. I'd really like to see the little sliver of parking fronting king turned into a parkette/gateway connection the entrances to the buildings and the street onto which many of them will walk/bike along to get to the site in the first place.

Not only would that be good for the people working there, but also for the people passing by. I'll bet a bit of interesting street presence would make this space even more desirable to potential tenants than it already appears to be.

Craig Beattie likes Waterloo Region so much, he actually moved here!

Heritage building gets $2 million facelift

Perimeter Development Corp. hopes to attract businesses to Simpson Block

Craig Beattie, a partner with Perimeter Developments Corp., stands on the roof of the Simpson Block, a high-profile heritage building that his firm is renovating. An outdoor patio is planned for the roof.

This article was actually already posted in the Suburban Kitchener Construction thread, because it isn't actually about the Breithaup Block (but rather the 117 King redevelopment). Feel free to create a new thread for that particular project, as it's been talked about quite a bit, and probably deserves its own space for that to continue.

My apologies- I wasn't aware. My thought was that those of you interested in the Breithaupt Block may also be interested in the other developments that Perimeter is tackling in the Region. I agree- 117 King is a great project and certainly worthy of its own thread!
  22. Doesnt seem to be much going on here these days. Any news on this? Whats happening with the front building facing King??
