  1. UW Math 3

    The four-storey Math 3 building will house the University of Waterloo's department of statistics and actuarial science, enabling expansion in all of the faculty of mathematics academic units: applied mathematics, combinatorics and optimization, computer science and pure mathematics

    The new building will provide 90,000 gross square feet of research and teaching space. It will accommodate a total of 134 faculty members, graduate students and staff.

    Completion of the building is scheduled for March 2011.

    We are grateful for the federal and provincial government funding we've received in support of this new facility, said Thomas Coleman, dean of the faculty of mathematics. Our focus is on the impact of mathematics and computational methodologies to solve real-world problems. This additional space will enable us to expand our research and academic programs in response to the needs of society.

    The Math 3 is required to support developing advanced technologies as well as training highly-qualified personnel to transfer new discoveries into Canadian industry. The Math 3 building has dedicated space for doctoral students, as well as masters students in both research and professional programs.

    The new facility will help expand research capacity for the faculty of mathematics, allowing for growth in three key areas: computational intelligence, health informatics and new media technologies.

    Canada and Ontario's innovation strategies depend on each of these areas to create the advances we need for our competitiveness and productivity. New laboratories and offices for researchers and graduate students will build on industry relationships and increase graduate training capacity to create technology exploited in Canada. Waterloo's entrepreneurial environment will foster exploitation of the results through collaborations with existing companies and new spin-offs

    There were workers on site yesterday. Either they're anxious to finish this or the crew wanted some holiday time and a half. Either way good progress in the last 2 weeks.

    I think the Math Faculty aims to have the ugliest buildings on campus.
    MC looks like a fortress
    DC reminds me of an 80s era McDonalds play place.

    They are just building something appropriate for math.

    Apparently not all faculties have as much money as Engineering.

    Although in MC's defense, all buildings built in that era kind of have the concrete fortress look.

    And DC was innovative for its time - all the exposed ducting, piping etc was considered a real change. The idea was to make the building look like a computer chip. I've always had a soft spot for it, to be honest.

    Frank Gehry said that he considers buildings to be more interesting while they're being built, so the Stata Center at MIT has a bunch of exposed ducting and concrete as well. DC is just ahead of its time that way.

    I do wish that the windows weren't tinted though. I'd like to get more natural sunlight!
