I find the idea of "street-facing" with "a better experience for pedestrians" rather amusing, considering it looks like the first floor of that building appears to be 6 or more feet above the sidewalk.

Probably due to flood-plain restrictions. Would you prefer it make no attempt at all to make the pedestrian realm interesting, and have it set back on a useless lawn or behind a parking lot?

eizenstriet, do you, or does anyone else have more info on this? What streets are we talking about here?

This subject should probably have a thread of its own. But, anyway, ward city councillor Melissa Durrell has set up a community meeting with Waterloo North Hydro:

    Uptown West Hydro Meeting
    Thursday June 21st, 7pm

I'll wait and see, but based on the rendering at the top of this thread, the space drawn in for Father David Bauer Drive definitely looks a lot larger than what is actually there.

Heaven forbid we have too much green space and trees in the city. Putting buildings too close to the street restricts future public space widenings that could accommodate things like divided bike trails, wider multi-use trails, cafe tables or other street fixtures.

Father David Bauer Drive is already wide enough to accomodate future expansion for those things, and is surrounded by trails.

Judging by the height of the third tower crane i think they must have altered the plan - they rarely put hose things up short of the ultimate height. Ergo, the building on the rendering closest to Father Bauer and the rec centre is going to be 4 stories, perhaps 5 imho.

Buildings in Toronto have their cranes raised regularly as construction progresses. I'm sure there is a limit on how high you can make one of these things without compromising stability. It's likely it would have been too tall and since they need to raise it anyway why go taller now?

It is great to see all of the activity at the site now.

BarrelYards developer to reveal hotel operator

    August 4, 2012 | Paige Desmond | The Record | LINK

WATERLOO — After several delays, an announcement may be made in the coming week naming the operator of a luxury hotel at Waterloo’s BarrelYards development.

Chris Pidgeon, an agent for the developer, said the news would likely be revealed next week.

“We’re inking a deal,” Pidgeon said. “It’s very close.”

The hotel was originally expected to open this month but now has an estimated completion date of early 2013.

Developers said in June the operator of what’s expected to be a top-of-the-line hotel would be announced in July. A boutique hotel operator from London, Ont., previously backed out.

Without a jacking system already installed you would have to disassemble the entire top unit (including counter-weights) in order to raise thie crane up - that's why they usually always top it out at the maximum height that will be needed. Why would you install a crane only to have to re-install it later. Kangaroo cranes are different, of course, as they have a jacking system in place for extending the overall height as the building goes up.

So I'm assuming no hotel operator reveal this week after all? While this site has finally seen some remarkable progress, I still can't believe how poorly Auburn handles its operations, especially in regards to PR.
