    The simplest way to increase the supply of affordable housing is to modify regulations to make it as easy to build a King student-tower with apartment units instead of five-bedroom units.

    However that would mean a drop in prices of the suburban homes of middle class folks so that's a non-starter.

    New affordable housing units to be added to David Street

    KITCHENER — This city’s provider of not-for-profit affordable housing aims to start construction in July on a new four-storey building with 21-units right next door to 35 David St. — right across from Victoria Park.
    Karen Kwiatkowski, the general manager of Kitchener Housing Inc., said the new building will be identical to the one at 35 David St., but it will have three more units.
    The new building will be attached to the existing one. That eliminates the need for a second lobby, another staircase and another elevator, making room for three additional units.

    I don't like that this is going to be identical to it's neighbour. Why not mix it up a bit?

    It seems that they will be attaching the second building to the first so that they can share a lobby, elevator, etc. so it makes sense to me to continue in the same style. Besides that, I think the building style fits in quite nicely with its surroundings and I really don't mind seeing a longer row of these units.

    It's too bad they didn't make the buildings a tad smaller and kept some space in between for a small courtyard. They're not bad though.

    Taken at noon, today. For subsidized housing, I find this to be a very credible effort, and the location overlooking the Victoria Park commons and a block from the transit terminal pays credit to Kitchener, imho. I did think they might put in a glass atrium between the two halves, but what is being done doesn't look bad a all.
