This is depressing, but apparently they're preserving that forested patch on the right side.

Probably not. If this Wal-Mart ever becomes a Supercentre, I wouldn't be surprised if some or all of that forested patch gets razed. I doubt that will be happening anytime soon though, as this Wal-Mart is never busy. It's actually a bit bizarre, I've never really seen a Wal-Mart as dead as this one always is. Compare it to the one at Sunrise! That one is insaaane. Wow...

True. It's also amazing how even with the Places to Grow Act and all the push for infill development the province is promoting projects like this or the Ira Needles Centre are still approved.. hopefully they're the the last of that horrible trend.

Ira Needles and presumably this project started the approval process under the older plans, so if they were rejected on the basis of the new one, the developer would appeal to the OMB and win.

What sickens me is how clearly disconnected the developer is from the site. That arrow pointing to "St Jacobs Farmers Market" is actually pointing to the antique warehouse and the arrow pointing to the St Jacobs Outlet Mall is actually pointing to the farmer's market.

One question though: is this project actually in Waterloo or is it in Woolwich Township? I might be totally off the mark here but I seem to recall someone saying that Smart Centers wanted to build in Waterloo but couldn't get approval so they approached Woolwich who welcomed them openly.
  9. This project is actually in Woolwich Township, but branded and marketed as SmartCentres Waterloo, hence the quotations in the thread title. I'm not too sure about the history of Woolwich "welcoming them openly", but it would sound about right.

SmartCentres owns another large property in Woolwich Township for yet another power centre. The land is on the east side of Ebycrest Road between Bridge Street and Victoria Street. The property straddles where the new Highway 7 will be going. Could this be home to the sixth Wal-Mart in Waterloo Region?
  10. Saw a sign out front of the new building saying Marks Work Wearhouse opens April 1. No joke.

I saw tonight that the Arby's is open and the First Choice Haircutters is sharing the same building. It doesn't look like FC Haircutters is open yet, but the sign is there. Sorry no photo, it was too dark and rainy.

Dollarama still not open I guess? Didn't know an Arby's was going in. Interesting (as much as it can be).

anybody knows how this `smart center` will affect small business places in St.Jacobs?

As a condition of development approvals, SmartCentres was required to install directional signs to St. Jacobs, Conestoga Mall, and Uptown Waterloo. They are very small, but there are 2 signs located at the intersection of Farmer's Market Road & King, and at the main intersection to Wal-Mart. Besides, I think this will attract a different market than St. Jacobs.

I agree...lets be real it is a Arby's, Walmart and Dollerrama... it's a different market then st jacobs/uptown.

Dollarama (only the green sign backing) and Mark's
  18. The vacant middle unit will likely be the Allstate.

You're probably right Duke.. however I'm not sure I would like to work in an office that smells of Arby's roast beef and hair permanent & colouring chemicals all day. I worked in an office beside a hair salon before and the daily smell of chemicals was sometimes too much to take.
