My statement was not meant to offend. There is clearly a problem being faced here otherwise we would not be discussing it, the papers would not be writing about it, people would not be trying to sell their homes wholesale and the city would not be studying how to fix it. The statement was factual.

What's more were a transient population of doctors, tech industry professionals, or any other profession moved here on 3 year contracts the institution responsible for the move would take responsability for housing or finding housing for those individuals. The Red Cross does, Doctors Without Borders does, RIM when moving staff to London England does, Google does when they move staff here from California. If any of those institutions moved the same volume of people as regularly as the universities do it would challenge the region. They don't so it isn't an issue.

Finding housing yes, building it segregated on their own campus at their own expense no.

I don't feel that is something you can say unequivocally simply because no firm in an industrialized country that I know of moves the same volume of staff in as transient a way as a University and particularily UofW. There may be examples of this in the developed world but the only ones that jump to my mind are firms like Foxconn in China who do in fact house migrant workers on a campus. That being said drawing comparison between Chinese migrant society and ours is difficult.

The army does, and while some on base housing is still available nowadays the majority of commissioned officers live off-base on housing that they themselves must find.

At UW, unless you live at St. Jerome's or Grebel, which are a few hundred combined, you can't anymore unless it's Spring Term. They're actually at capacity for residence for first years for Fall and Winter terms, even including CLV (which was NEVER meant for first years). They don't promise spots in residence anymore for this reason.

You’re right, at UW the majority of residence space on campus is for first-year students. There are some upper-year spaces in the fall (Living-Learning Communities and 4-stream students), a few hundred spaces open up in the winter with students moving away for co-op, and there’s plenty of opportunity in the spring for on-campus residence.
The residence guarantee is for incoming first-year students. Having first-year students on campus can help transition students into the community; while education programs talk about upper year housing – with a focus on finding off-campus accommodations.

What a waste of materials that could have been easily recycled.
It's sad that for probably 1 extra day of work this demoltion could have been so much better.

Does anyone know if Kieswetter does all their demolitions like htis?

I don't believe so as they own a company called http://www.timelessmaterials.com/ which is based upon material reclamation. I assume they assessed the property and determined none of the material was worth the effort of deconstruction over demolition.
