I'm not sure that the editor that came up with that headline knows what it means to "meet one's Waterloo".
It's an odd headline for an article that is generally positive about Kitchener.

    I like this sentence:

"Later this year, regional GO trains will finally provide service, even if the speed of the trains will roughly equal that of those travelling the same route in the 1850s on the Grand Trunk."

I found it interesting that there have been desires, and resistance, to amalgamation since the First World War. The more things change...

"During the First World War, some community leaders and provincial politicians had mused about merging Berlin and neighbouring, more British Waterloo. Although both had a “German” majority, the cities were different, with Waterloo an insurance capital and its dominant business the famous Seagram distillery. Waterloo, with about a quarter the population of Berlin, seemed a “tasty morsel” to Berlin business and political leaders, but Seagram and other Waterloo business leaders resisted being chewed up."

Thanks for sharing. I enjoyed the article.

    Although, regarding the line:

In a chamber crammed with LRT supporters, council surprised with a 9-2 vote in favour.
Did council really surprise? C'mon. Didn't we all know deep down inside that the votes would swing that way?

We knew, I think, but did the general populace? I think many did not expect it to be such a wide margin.

Great to see the piece is by John English - local historian of some note. His biographies of Trudeau are pretty much definitive.

Since it's Macleans, I shouldn't be surprised but what a lame headline they have given English's article. I am glad to see the acknowledgement of the leading role of the Kitchener business community in the creation of UofW, something that seems to have faded from minds in recent years.
