That's good news - the type of shop I'd like to see more of down in the Market area. If we could only get a Dutchies and a decent cheese shop ......
If not commented on elsewhere, I see that Mel's Diner at Westmount and Ottawa Sts looks like it will soon be ready to open. I was also interested to see that Holy Guacamole on Duke Street is renovating a larger space next door to the recently opened location and will be moving soon.
By the way, on this visit to Kitchener, I got in to try the beef burrito at Holy Guacamole. Not great, but decent, fresh and reasonably priced. They certainly didn't hold back on the jalapenos (which I requested)- I was dabbing tears from my eyes!
If you haven't seen it, this Record piece gives a good review to breakfasts at the Silver Spoon. I only realized they had a restaurant area when I popped in to buy some chocolates the other week (their chocolates are excellent, by the way!). Seems worth checking out if wandering the Downtown on a nice summer's morning.
A breakfast worth your time

Dining Out Silver Spoon Café, 217 King Street West, Kitchener, 519-579-6979 Philip Walker/Record staff
You’ve probably driven past that brilliant red storefront, complete with the jaunty, golden teapot, while cruising along King in downtown Kitchener. I had, but until recently, hadn’t ventured beyond The Silver Spoon’s front door.
Just notice Smoke's Poutinerie is opening on King Street across from Morty's. If they stay open late on weekend's they will make a killing with the university crowd.

The website doesn't seem to have an address, are there signs up or is there some other source as to exact location?Originally Posted by WatDot
It will be located in the BMO Plaza which includes Sakura Island, Rogers and Quick Sandwich on King St & Hickory, across from Morty's. Sign's are up in the windows. They will make a killing with the student crowd.
The site says the Waterloo location is open:Originally Posted by WatDot

If those do turn out to be the hours, then that's not too bad at all.
Looks like Holy Guacamole is expaning and taking two of the adjoining units.
Also, new take out pizza place going into that plaza as well. Getting ready for courthouse traffic I guess.
Yes, looks like buisness is going well! and even though the reno is not complete yet... it already looks a lot better then the new resturant on the corner (exclamations). I mean, I was sooooo excited Fredricks was gone. From the outside it looks as though they just slapped some black paint on the window trim (Very dissapointing). I just hope they still have plans for the exterior.Originally Posted by KWrealestate

Not just a pizza place, a wood-fired pizza place. Also, this ain't the suburbs - that's not a plaza, it's a building, a block, or a street!Originally Posted by KWrealestate
And I believe I saw that the restaurant on the corner of Duke and Frederick is now open. Someone should stop by and report back.
I didn't go in, but yes, there is a new restaurant in that corner.Originally Posted by mpd618
Opening day! In case you cannot read the sign above the door they are giving away free burgers with a donation. Downside; the line is a little long:

This seems to have flown under the radar, but in the Westmount Plaza by Sun Life there is apparently something called The Westmount Gastro Pub. (More details on their Twitter and Facebook.)
Hadn't heard a word about this. I think this is a great location for such a pub. Unfortunately, if the picture on Facebook is any indication of their normal beer list, they don't have any micro beers on tap...hopefully that will change. Look forward to trying their food. Thanks for the heads up.Originally Posted by mpd618

A new Salavadoran restaurant called "The Guanaquita" opened about two weeks ago above Frankie's Pub on King St. Not licenced yet, but hoping to have it in a couple of weeks. Kitchener is turning into a good place to get pupusas! (yum!!)
In the same building, in the old Cake Box location, another new restaurant called "@ 217west" is set to open in about a week. I am told that the menu will be "Canadian" as in salads, sandwiches, pasta, etc, etc.

It's actually 271 West - more information on their site.Originally Posted by panamaniac
And as a quick update, these are the same folks that bring a mobile wood-fired pizza oven to events. They're called Bread Heads, and there's more on their Twitter and website.Originally Posted by rob_929
And this one is on Facebook, where they have a menu posted.Originally Posted by panamaniac

Thanks for that mpd618. It looks like @271west will have a more ambitious menu than I realized - yet another option for the locavores. I had to smile at the inclusion of "poutine" among the appetizers at The Guanaquita - a case of "if you can't beat 'em, join 'em", I guess. The prices on their menu are very reasonable - definitely one I am going to have to check out.
By the way, I think that "Guanaquita" Gwah-nah-KWEE-tah would translate as "little Salvadoran girl".
The range of dining options Downtown is really growing!
Since we are on the topic of Downtown Dining, I wanted to remind every one about the little jewel Northern Thai.
We grabbed some takeout on Friday night and it was fantastic. The food was delicious as usual. I don't think there is anything I don't like here, but what was stand out on the night was the service. How can I rave about take out service? Well we placed our order and then the waitress asked if we would like a glass of water while we waited. I know, a small silly thing but on a hot night it was such a nice jesture. The order was ready in 15 mins and we were on the way to enjoy dinner on my patio. If you like thai and have not been here- please go. The owners are doing things right!
