History of Stemmler Meats & Cheese

Quote:

Stemmler Meats and Cheese had a humble beginning in 1985. The first facility was in the family garage with a retail outlet at the local farmers market. Within the year our new store was built in Heidelberg, Ontario. The original square footage was 1200 sq. ft. The first customer of the new store was Doug Bender of St. Clements, he was the owner of Watcon Construction. His company built the store.

Stemmler Meats and Cheese became quickly known for lean cuts, quality meats and a real unique concept. The cutting and processing rooms were open for everyone to see. We would show our customers how we would prepare their food while they waited. Watching the "behind the scene" meat processing techniques interested people and put their minds to ease.

Five years after our doors opened we expanded to our current size of 2300 sq. ft. Even though our industry had some hard times, we continued to thrive by not cutting any corners. We developed several products which did not included flour or milk. This seemed to accommodate a lot of people with intestinal disorders. Members of the Celiac Society have been referred to our store by their attending Physicians.

Over the years our products have continued to win many awards. You are able to review our awards on our site. The awards gave our consumers a real confidence that our promise to quality never changed. For many years we have supplied the Concordia Club with schnitzel, pig tails and many other products especially for October Fest. In the year 2000 we supplied 150,000 people with sausage at the Molson Indy in Toronto. That lead to more of our products being sold to many restaurants all over Southern Ontario.

Currently, we are now in the process of building a new production facility. In the near future our retail atmosphere will represent a real "Bavarian style". Everything will be different and new however our promise to quality will never change. It is what our customers want and it is what Stemmler Meats and Cheese will continue to provide.

Maybe this is just me, but I've had a recurring problem when using Quick Reply. I click that, I type my post, and I go to submit it - and my too-quick-thinking brain clicks the big obvious button below, Reply to Thread.

Which does not submit my Quick Reply, but instead goes to the standard Reply screen, with a blank form. So I've just lost my post.

I've been trying to train myself to work around that, but it keeps getting to me (especially if I'm using Reply with Quote, which always uses the Quick Reply layout).

Is there any way to adjust things so it does not trip me up? And does anyone else have this problem?

August 27, 2010
By Jeff Outhit, Record staff

WATERLOO — Waterloo wants more vegetables grown in community gardens, in part to help people eat healthier. And taxpayers may be willing to help.

Council is considering using city staff to build small gardens in city parks. Staff would also deliver water, remove yard waste and erect signs. In return, neighbours would agree to plant, maintain and harvest the plots.

Annual city costs are estimated at up to $4,500.

Since 2000, Waterloo has had one community garden in the Sunnydale neighbourhood at Heasley Park. Ten plots are farmed at private expense, typically by families who grow pole beans, tomatoes, peppers, cucumbers, and potatoes.

Bill McFaddin farms there and coordinates the garden. He’s persuaded that if the city offers more help to residents, more community gardens will emerge in other parks.

“I think that’s a very smart move,” he said. “If the city promotes it, there’s going to be a lot of people jumping at this opportunity, I’m pretty sure of it.”

Beechwood neighbours hope to launch a vegetable garden in Clair Lake Park next year.

“There are people that come here from other countries. It’s part of their culture to grow their own food,” Coun. Angela Vieth said.

Vieth sees city aid as a useful way to promote gardens that will help the environment and help build stronger neighbourhoods. “Taxpayers benefit,” she said.

Kitchener has more than 18 community gardens operating under a similar program. City staff will help launch a garden on public or private land, at a taxpayer cost of up to $1,500.

There are community gardens in Cambridge but that city does not allow them on city-owned land and does not contribute to them.

Waterloo aims to have five community gardens within five years if council approves the new program.

Residents are more likely to launch community gardens and maintain them if they have some municipal support, said Rhonda Larsh, park technologist with the City of Waterloo.

“It’s always been a passion of mine to offer fresh, affordable food to people,” Larsh said.
