Local Investing in Waterloo Region - Amy Cortese
The Waterloo Regional Enterprise Network Inc. would like to invite the community to attend a speaker event on June 25, 2013 from 5-7PM. The event takes place at the Walper Hotel, 20 Queen Street South in Downtown Kitchener. Out guest speaker is Amy Cortese, an award-winning journalist and editor who covers topics spanning business, finance, food, wine and environmental issues.
Waterloo Air Show
This year’s show is bigger and better than ever with new acts, a bigger static display, Food Truck Alley and the inclusion of the Canadian Aviation Expo, Canada’s premier aviation expo and trade show. Saturday June 1 & Sunday June 2 @ the Region of Waterloo International Airport.
BikeFest
BikeFest was a city festival May 25th celebrating the power of the simple bicycle and raising awareness of its potential in positively transforming Kitchener's health, environment, and community.
There are great things for the whole family: free tune-ups; a Scavenger Hunt; CAN-BIKE cycling skills workshop; try riding the BigBike; complete a short cycling survey; bike to the Kitchener Market to earn $5 off your lunch; try out the new sharrows and artistic bike racks; enjoy free food and live music, while the kids have fun in the bouncy castle, you watch a bicycle polo match demonstration, or check out the vendor area featuring cycling-related services.
There will be hourly prize draws during throughout the event and the more activities people participate in, the more ballots they’ll receive for prize draws.
Paddle In The Park
Canoe rentals opened in Victoria Park on May 17th. The grand opening and launch took place at noon near The Boathouse, with Mayor Zehr & Councillor Etherington taking the first canoe ride. Paddle In The Park boat rentals is operated by Canoeing the Grand in a 45-day trial period until June 30.
Panthers Home Opener Postponed
The Kitchener Panthers home opener has been postponed due to inclement weather. The next two games in Kitchener are on Tuesday, May 14 and Thursday May 16, both at 7:30PM at Jack Couch Park. Please stay tuned for updates regarding a rescheduled game versus The Guelph Royals.
This is Our City: A Weaving Program
A six-month project targeted at homeless and at-risk youth produced the May exhibit for the Rotunda Gallery. The project, entitled We Got Skilz, is part of the This is Our City: A Weaving Program for youth 16-25 who access the services at Reaching Our Outdoor Friends. A reception was held Thursday from 7-9 p.m.
Jane's Walk
Jane's Walks are free tours led by your neighbours that explore the city from an insider's perspective. Since its inception in 2007, Jane's Walk has happened on the first weekend in May in cities around the world. This year there's 17 walks in Waterloo Region.
Ontario Budget 2013
The 2013 Ontario Budget proposes a prosperous and fair Ontario by:
- Establishing a Youth Jobs Strategy of $295 million over two years to create jobs and mentorship opportunities for about 30,000 youth and promote entrepreneurship and innovation
- Creating jobs through investments in infrastructure for public transit, roads, bridges, hospitals and schools
- Reducing auto insurance rates by 15 per cent on average for nine million drivers
- Helping 46,000 more people receive home and community care quickly and in the comfort of their own home
- Providing tax relief to small businesses to create more jobs by increasing their Employer Health Tax exemption from $400,000 to $450,000 of payroll
- Taking steps to transform social assistance to help more recipients find jobs and improve their financial security.
The deficit for 2012-13 is now estimated to be $9.8 billion — a $5.0 billion improvement compared with the 2012 Budget forecast.
WHAT'S ION A NAME?
Regional Council is set to approve the selection of ION as the new brand name for the Region’s Rapid Transit service Tuesday morning. During the initial Public Consultation phase, ION was the most preferred option of the participants who provided feedback, registering strong first impressions and word associations.
Canoe Kayak Ontario: That Dam Hespeler Race
The race will run from the Mill Pond and up the Speed River then return with the various classes doing loops to get to the 10K, 15K & 20K lengths. First race starts at 10:30 AM. Onsite registration & sign-in from 8:30 – 9:45 AM. Food & award ceremonies for paddlers after the race. Prizes & trophies from local sponsors.
