Cambridge Riverbank makeover ‘full throttle ahead’
July 12, 2010 | Kevin Swayze | The Record

CAMBRIDGE — The old Riverbank restaurant is a construction site, but wedding couples are booking their parties in the stone landmark along the Grand River at Parkhill Road.

It’s an expression of confidence that leaves manager Leanne Ciancone heartened — and anxious.

“Three have booked. We haven’t even started advertising, which is the crazy part . . . there’s no backing down now: were going to have to be open in a year,” she said.

“We’re full throttle ahead.”

She’s part owner of the $5 million project with her brothers Aaron and James. The Landmark Group also runs the Ancaster Old Mill and Spencer’s in Burlington on the Lake Ontario waterfront. They also own the historic old post office on Water Street in Cambridge.

Chain-link fences went up around the one-time grist mill last Thursday. Workers are expected to start Monday on the year-long job to remake the historic site into an upscale restaurant and reception centre.

It’s been a restaurant in several incarnations over the last four decades. It was two years ago that the last restaurant tenant pulled out abruptly, leaving wedding couples scrambling.

The Ciancones have owned the building for nearly two years, but haven’t done anything as they sorted out city zoning and land ownership issues. That took most of a year, including buying some remnant slivers of abutting land from the city and Grand River conservation authority.

Nothing inside the building will be left as it was before renovation, Ciancone said.

The first floor will be opened as the 80-seat Hespeler room. It’s storage space now with river-facing windows river bricked up after the 1974 flood.

The second floor — where the main entrance is — will seat 140 people and have easy access a new outdoor patio along the river, seating 90 more.

The main floor solarium will expand, as the glass walls are extended up to the third floor to give panoramic views to people there in the 180-seat Preston Ballroom.

The fourth-floor attic is also opening up for guest use. The Galt Room will seat about 30 people for “boardroom or intimate gatherings . . . double doors will look out over the river. It will be impressive,” Ciancone said.

While the family works on the Cambridge property, there are also ideas bubbling for the land next door beside the Waterscape condominium tower that’s expected to be done by year’s end.

The Ciancones and Paul de Haas, Waterscape’s developer, are talking about a joint project, perhaps some kind of hotel and conference centre. That’s all they say publicly, for now.

The city is reviewing an application help clean up the contaminated factory land, by delaying increases in property taxes. That money is instead put toward helping pay for remediation. Later, taxes would increase.

City council has been told in closed session about the application, but no firm plans for the site have been submitted, said city lawyer Steve Matheson. Council must approve any tax deal in open session.

And the Ciancones are trying to do something special with the old Post Office on Water Street South. The nationally designated heritage site has also seen use as restaurants and nightclubs over the years.

Plans have stalled to turn it into a restaurant and art gallery in partnership with the Cambridge Library, after a federal grant application was rejected. Brainstorming to find ways to partner with community organizations continue as the focus is on getting the Cambridge Mill open for business, Ciancone said.

A hotel and conference center between this and the Waterscapes would be quite nice! Although it'll take forever again to clean up the site.

There's an article explaining what they're doing to the space posted in this thread I believe. Just redoing it all.

Where is the accessible entrance? A little disappointed that I don't see one. I imagine they have it somewhere, but people who require accessible access shouldn't feel like they are being brought in the back door.

Amazing picture of Galt. Where did you take this picture? Was there a point where you could fit the entire area of downtown Galt in?

It was taken from the 7th floor of the Waterscape Condos, and the view can be yours for a cool 1/3rd of a mil. I have a wider angle 'galt skyline' photo which I'll post tomorrow.

Thank you for your interest in our project and for posting the photos. I do not get to view the site as often as I'd like, but these are perfect!
For accessible entrance - on the left side of the staircase entrance we are building a glassed enclosed elevator to access all 5 floors, which can be driven right up to. This has not been started yet, but soon!

I'm delighted to see the progress with the old mill. I have grown up and experienced the various restaurants that have occupied the space. The spot has always been a favorite for family dinners and I hope that this restaurant is here to stay. Cambridge has been blessed to have lots of fine dining establishments and the addition of the Cambridge Mill will surely be welcomed by all.

I hope it doesn't look quite like that when it is done. The new modern-style building right beside the stone-walled building really clashes (top picture).

I actually like the contrast. It goes to show that there is no accounting for taste :RpS_tongue:

Ya thats what I thought too, a good contrast between old and new. I love seeing that when old buildings are restored. Although sometimes just old is good too.

I personally like this building. I used to eat there before they re-designed it, and I always liked overlooking the river as I ate.

A friend of mine is getting married here in October so I'm looking forward to seeing it done.

Contrast between old and new isn't a bad thing. I personally think they could of matched colours better however. Not a fan of the green. Using aluminum (or whatever metal that is) that matches the roof (dark grey) would have been more appropriate IMO.

Ya that was one thing that stood out to me, the green. It's not a deal breaker, but it's not ideal. Like you said, the colour of the roof would have worked. Or even stainless steel.

Yeah what is up with the green? It could be worse.

I have to say - I'm concerned with the green as well. The rendering above shows clean, clear lines - possibly blue - but something that flows naturally. The green is a juxtaposition that takes too much away from the original mill.

They've updated the renderings to account for the green tint of the windows as well as a change in the design to the extension of the mill.

I think the window tinting should have been blue. It would look nicer with the water, give it a fresh clean look. The green sort of looks old and cheap, but I guess thats just me. Everything looks nice though, just down the street from the waterscape condos. The area as a whole is going to make downtown Cambridge more and more appealing.

I agree blue would have been nicer but its just great to see the building re-developed. Galt is such a beautiful area with all those stone buildings and being right on the river.

People always say Waterloo Region is unfortunate in that it doesn't have a core, but I think its unique in that it has three totally DIFFERENT cores. Waterloo / Kitchener / and the region in mini (P/H/C) - Cambridge all distinct from one another. Can't really say one is better than the other as they are so different, but combined all contribute to make Waterloo Region a wonderful place to call home.

NOW lets get the LRT built and link them the hell up!!! LOL

Awesome looking restaurant. They opened this past Saturday and I can't wait to try it out. The only part I dislike is the long surface parking lot between this and Waterscape.

Great article in The Globe about Downtown Galt. I put this here as the most significant news from this article (to me anyway) is the bit about putting a hotel on this site.

My wife and I ate on the new open air terrace the week it opened in August and it was a great experience. Great food and views. We are so excited to be living within a 20 min walk of downtown. Restaurants, cafes and the market. Its so much nicer than being in the burbs of east Galt.

Had our yearly end of year golf club social here tonight, and I have to say that the renovations are absolutely stunning. Landmark sunk a ton of cash into this place, and it definitely shows. It is nothing like it used to be, all the finishings and renovations are first rate.

Other businesses catering to this market take note; there is a new boss in town.
