General Meeting
Conestoga College Room 2A301

There was a change of meeting notice as the original speaker (in the newsletter) ended up being sent away for work.

The September 28 WHS meeting will feature Ralph Beaumont, Manager of Environmental Education at the Grand River Conservation Authority (http://www.wonderfulwaterloo.com/showthread.php/72-Grand-River-Conservation-Authority).

No single geographic feature has affected Waterloo region's development as much as the Grand River but it has been a temperamental partnership over the years. It was that unpredictability which caused the formation of a watchdog authority back in the 1930s.

Ralph Beaumont will outline the early work of the Grand River Conservation Commission formed in 1934; the Grand Valley Conservation Authority of 1948; and the Grand River Conservation Authority itself which was created when those two bodies amalgamated in 1966.

Originally the early efforts were aimed at controlling the river. In later years the work of the Grand River Conservation Authority has extended to increasing our benefits from the Grand in areas such as recreation, commerce, ecology and education. This well-illustrated presentation will provide us with a whole new way of seeing our own heritage river.
