About Us
The Word On The Street is an annual one-day national book and magazine family festival celebrating literacy and the written arts. Held in four cities across Canada simultaneously on the last Sunday in September - Vancouver, Kitchener, Toronto and Halifax - The Word on the Street promotes the importance of literacy with free exhibits, performances and hands-on activities.

2009 marks the eighth anniversary for the Kitchener festival. This year's program features seven event tents, exceptional live entertainment, a stellar lineup of children and adult authors, intriguing panel discussions/workshops and more than 20 exhibitors representing Waterloo Region's thriving writing arts community.

Mission Statement
To unite the country in a national, annual celebration of reading and writing, and to highlight the importance of literacy in the lives of all Canadians.

Concept
To feature The Word on the Street festival in cities throughout the country to achieve the following objectives on a national level.

Objectives
To bring writing, publishing and literacy communities together to heighten the awareness and encourage and foster a positive attitude towards literacy. To emphasize the joy of reading, and enhance public appreciation of the printed word in a fun and completely accessible environment. To increase the public awareness of, and interest in, the quality and quantity of Canadian authored/produced books and magazines, thereby stimulating the demand to purchase and invest in Canadian talent.

The Word on the Street celebrates 10 years
City of Kitchener | Doc (http://www.kitchener.ca//uploads/doc_634517669562265000.doc)

Enjoy the spoken and written word at Kitchener’s 10th The Word on the Street on Sunday, Sept. 25 from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. This year’s festival will be on the Clock Tower Common in Victoria Park, with stages for author readings, children's entertainment, spoken word and storytelling, exhibitions representing Waterloo Region’s literary community and much more!

There will be birthday cake at 1 p.m., while quantities last, next to the Kitchener Radio Group and Canadian Heritage Reading Rocks tents.

Visit the Heritage Canada Children’s tent for stories, crafts and music. Enjoy fabulous children’s books, presented by Canadian authors and illustrators, as well as some special community readers. The tent is hosted by Erick Traplin. The Kitchener-Waterloo Art Gallery will also be on-site, with an art project related to this year’s Let’s Read book.

The Waterloo Regional Record Lifestyle Tent features workshops by Frankie Flowers (Get Growing); Carla Johnson (Cooking with Sin); Heather Fraser (Peanut Allergy Epidemic), and Ted Reader (Napoleon’s Everyday Gourmet Burgers).

Kitchener Public Library features a unique collection of books -- the Human Library. These books are real people, who are volunteering to share their story with you from noon to 4 p.m. Discover fascinating tales from your own community! Here are some of this year’s titles:

Professional Astrologer
African Refugee
World War II Veteran
Vietnam Draft Dodger
Muslim Woman
Anorexia & Recovery
Theatre Set Designer
Severe Peanut Allergy
Sex Educator
AIDS Activist

To sign out a Human Library book, you meet one-on-one with the person who is volunteering to share their story. Through conversation, the person (book) shares their story and answers your questions. Appointments are first come, first served.

Stop by the Latitudes Storytelling tent where word weavers mix experience and tradition with the arts in imaginative ways. Explore digital storytelling with Dwight Storring. Also featuring spoken word poetry, music and theatre, with performances by Street Vibe Collective, Alice Lee Monroe, Janice Lee and Aaron Bell. Put away your preconceptions about storytelling.

Sean Puckett, Kitchener’s 2011 artist-in-residence, will be onsite taking portrait photos for his Portrait of Kitchener project in the arts tent.

Gee, Impact 11, CAFKA 11 and now Word on the Street all at practically the same time - Downtown is getting downright couth!
