Blues fest gets too big for King St.

Has the Kitchener Blues Festival become too big for downtown? That's a question organizers of the seven-year-old festival are pondering today after record crowds approaching 65,000 people packed Kitchener's core for a weekend of free outdoor music.
Big names such as Eric Burdon and the Animals, the Jeff Healey Blues Band and David Wilcox helped draw over 20,000 more people to the event this weekend than last year, said publicity director Claude Cloutier. Only seven years ago, the upstart blues fest had just 3,000 people come out for six hours of music.
Now, Cloutier said, the festival's organizers are talking openly about expanding the event away from the downtown, to venues such as Victoria Park, and expanding the lineup of musicians.
"These are just ideas at this point. But there's some feeling we have outgrown downtown," Cloutier said yesterday as workers rushed to dismantle staging on King Street. "We'll have to sit down and talk about where we go from here."
He stressed, however, the heart of the festival should remain in the city centre.
"We haven't maxed out what we can do downtown . . . we don't want to take away from downtown, but we need to look at how we can expand our program. "We're an urban festival, and we don't want to change that," Cloutier said.
Next year, there's a good chance organizers will want to secure more headliners to play in the afternoon, which used to be a poorer-attended time slot for performers.
That wasn't the case this year, Cloutier said.
"The crowd for David Wilcox Saturday afternoon was as big as a typical Saturday night crowd," he said. "Sunday afternoon, we had 5,000 people put up with the rain just to see Jeff Healey play."
Growing the festival, though, will also depend on securing strong corporate sponsorships and grants, Cloutier said.
