Waterloo Region, June 11, 2010 - Peter Braid, Member of Parliament for Kitchener-Waterloo, the Honourable John Milloy, Minister of Research and Innovation and Minister of Training, Colleges and Universities, and Member of Provincial Parliament for Kitchener-Centre, and, Regional Chair Ken Selling today unveiled an interpretive plaque to commemorate the rehabilitation of the historic Bridgeport Bridge and completion of the new traffic roundabout at Lancaster and Bridge streets in Kitchener.

The bridge and roundabout projects were funded using $873,498 from the federal Gas Tax Fund, $5 million from the Region’s allocation under the 2008 Investing in Ontario Act, and more than $6 million from the Region of Waterloo Roads Rehabilitation Fund.

"The Gas Tax Fund provides municipalities with the resources they need to pursue long-term goals," says MP Braid. "The Government of Canada is proud to support this important community project, and to work together with local partners to deliver positive results.”

"Improving the traffic flow in this area means commuters will spend less time in their vehicles and more time with their families," said Minister Milloy. "The McGuinty government is proud to have been a key funding partner for this important project."

“We’re happy to have been able to preserve and to recognize the Bridgeport Bridge which is an important part of our heritage in Waterloo Region,” said Chair Selling. “At the same time, with construction of a modern roundabout, we were able to significantly improve the traffic flow and safety at the Bridge and Lancaster intersection - long a major bottleneck in our road system.”

Constructed in 1934, the Bridgeport Bridge is a five-span concrete bowstring arch bridge that spans 126 meters. The bridge is an important cultural heritage resource and landmark for the community of Bridgeport.

A cap on development had been in place for the Bridgeport area since 1996. With the construction of the roundabout and the resulting improvements in traffic flow, the cap has been removed to allow up to 65 per cent of the potential development to proceed. Once this development has occurred, traffic operations in the area will be reviewed again to determine if additional development could proceed. If the new Highway 7 becomes operational prior to this review, full development would be permitted to proceed.

The project has also resulted in improvements to the pedestrian and cycling trail network in the area with the addition of a sidewalk on the south side of Lancaster Street, the retrofitting of a new sidewalk on the downstream side of the Bridge providing pedestrian access across the Grand River along both sides of Bridge Street, and connections to the Walter Bean Trail and Bridgeport Community Trail.

The Heritage Bridge Recognition Program was initiated by the Region of Waterloo’s Heritage Planning Advisory Committee in 2004. The purpose of the program is to recognize the Top 10 most significant historic bridges in the region through the installation of interpretive plaques. The Bridgeport Bridge ranks as the Region’s seventh most significant historic bridge. In addition to the plaque unveiled today, other interpretive plaques have been installed at the Freeport Bridge, Hartman Bridge, Mill Creek Bridge, and Black Bridge Road Bridge. A plaque for the Main Street Bridge in Cambridge will be installed later in 2010.

The federal Gas Tax Fund provides funding for community infrastructure such as drinking water and wastewater systems, roads and bridges, public transit and other environmentally sustainable infrastructure projects. The Region of Waterloo will receive $58.7 million between 2010-2014 from the Gas Tax Fund.

Municipalities in Ontario benefited from $1.1 billion in infrastructure funding under the Investing In Ontario Act. By redirecting a portion of the provincial surplus to municipalities for capital purposes, the Ontario government is contributing to the province's municipal infrastructure needs. The Region of Waterloo has received a total of $22,596,062 under the Investing in Ontario Act.
