Jane's Walk will be returning to Waterloo Region this year with a number of different walks across the region. This year they'll be held on May 7th & 8th.

Details about various walks:

Kitchener (http://janeswalk.net/cities/category/kitchener/)
Waterloo (http://janeswalk.net/cities/category/waterloo/)
Cambridge (http://janeswalk.net/cities/category/cambridge/)
We can add more info to this thread at a later date, but for now I just wanted to get the info up about the various walks. They'll be held this weekend, May 1st and 2nd.

Anyone planning on going on any of the walks? I was going to go to Toronto to see the Jays play, but since this is going on and the Jays aren't playing too well, I might stick around instead.

Wow! I thought I was an avid walker but I've never heard of Jane's Walk.

Thanks for the link. If I didn't have other obligations this weekend I'd likely participate. Next year!

Of course I've heard of Jane Jacobs. I've walked past her home (http://www.flickr.com/photos/fynes/256830664/) dozens of times. But I'd never heard of this wonderful idea that serves as a tribute to her legacy.

Rediscover your community with Jane’s Walk
Free neighbourhood tours are returning to Waterloo Region this year
http://www.region.waterloo.on.ca/web/region.nsf/$All/28128327E8A31CB785257713005F95BE?OpenDocument

(Kitchener, ON – April 28, 2010) On May 1 and 2, thousands of Canadians will take to the streets as part of the fourth annual Jane’s Walk, a series of free neighbourhood walking tours that explore our collective history, architecture, planning and personalities.

Jane’s Walk is held in cities across the world to celebrate the legacy of Jane Jacobs, the foremost urban thinker of our times. Jane’s Walk inspires citizens to get to know their city and each other by getting out and walking. Jacobs famously declared that walkable, diverse and mixed-used neighborhoods are the hallmark of a healthy city and its people.

This is the second year that Waterloo Region will participate in Jane’s Walk. Last year, a total of 100 people participated in eight local walks, and walk organizers are hoping for an even bigger turnout this year. Ten walks in Kitchener and five in Waterloo are planned for this weekend, and two more will take place in Cambridge next weekend, on May 9.

“For Jane Jacobs, the best way to get to know the city and the neighbours was on foot,” says Jane Farrow, executive director of Jane’s Walk. “Jacobs encouraged everyone to just get out and look around, to walk the sidewalks and talk about what they thought needed to happen to make their neighbourhood better.”

Waterloo Region residents will be able to choose from a variety of walks, depending on what they are interested in seeing and learning about. The following is a list of walk topics:

Kitchener Walks

Downtown Kitchener Roll and Stroll - Accessible? (2 walks)
Ending Homelessness
First Successful Flax Mill in Upper Canada
Iron Horse Trail (2 walks)
Kitchener's Warehouse District
Living in Downtown Kitchener
Mount Hope Neighbourhood
Victoria Park: A Romantic Landscape of History
Waterloo Walks

Old Lakeshore
The Historic Village of Waterloo: Public Spaces Then and Now (2 walks)
The UpTown LOOP (2 walks)

Cambridge Walks (May 9th)

Preston: Reurbanization, Reuse and Raze
Preston: Rivers, Dams and Mills

For detailed information about the walking tours in Waterloo Region, please go to www.janeswalk.net.

About Jane Jacobs
Jane Jacobs (1916-2006) was an urbanist and activist whose writings championed a fresh, community-based approach to city building. She had no formal training as a planner, and yet her 1961 best seller, The Death and Life of Great American Cities, introduced ground-breaking ideas about how cities function, evolve and fail that are now common sense to today’s architects, planners, politicians and activists. Foremost is her simple yet revolutionary idea that dense, mixed use neighborhoods are the key to the health and survival of a city.

About Jane’s Walk
Jane’s Walk cultivates a broad understanding of how cities – their economies, neighbourhoods, communities, and institutions – organically develop and thrive. It works to advance walkable neighbourhoods, to increase urban literacy and promote neighbourhood cohesion, civic engagement and leadership.

JANE’S WALK 2011
Kitchener, Waterloo, and Cambridge
May 7-8, 2011

“No one can find what will work for our cities by looking at …suburban garden cities, manipulating scale
models, or inventing dream cities. You’ve got to get out and walk”
– Jane Jacobs

WHAT IS JANE’S WALK?

Jane’s Walk is the street-level celebration of Jane Jacobs' legacy. Sponsored by The Centre for City Ecology across North America, the event combines the simple act of walking with personal observations, urban history and local lore as a means of knitting people together into strong and resourceful communities. Jane’s Walk aids in the socially desirable goal of getting people out of their cars and onto the sidewalks for the basic tasks of daily life, shopping, schools, and work.

This will be the third year that Waterloo Region participates in Jane’s Walk. For the first annual Waterloo Region Jane’s Walk in 2009, eight neighbourhood walks were organized and more than 100 people participated across the region. The walks were so successful that, in 2010, Jane’s Walk grew to 14 neighbourhood walks and more than 250 participants in Waterloo Region.

Jane’s Walks are meant to be fun and participatory – everyone has a story and they are usually keen to share it. All tours are given and taken for free.

YOU CAN ORGANIZE AND LEAD A NEIGHBOURHOOD WALK!

You can lead a tour in an area where you live, work or play. It simply involves planning a route, thinking through the stories, places, and people you want to talk about, then walking participants through it – you decide what’s important. You can also share the guiding duties with a few friends.

The publicity, logistics, and website for the event are handled by The Centre for City Ecology. Staff from the Region of Waterloo will work with The Centre to promote our local events on the Jane’s Walk website.

You can learn more about Jane Jacobs, her work, and the Jane’s Walk event (including ‘tips for tour guides’ and other resources) by visiting www.janeswalk.net. You do not have to be familiar with Jane Jacobs’ work to lead a tour.

JOIN US AS WE MEET TO PLAN THE EVENT

If you are interested in organizing and leading a tour, please join us at our meeting on:

We received a lot of great comments and feedback about this after dark walk in downtown Kitchener - it seems to be sticking with people. To keep the discussion going, we've started a discussion on our Facebook page. You can find it here (http://www.facebook.com/topic.php?uid=346645381941&topic=17026)- and you can also contribute to it!

Our walk took a community safety perspective - what are ingredients of a vibrant, dynamic, safe & healthy community? Are these elements at play in downtown Kitchener? How do we feel in an environment that exhibits these ingredients compared to one that is missing these key elements?
Our walk included stops along the way that are known, and lesser known, examples of these key ingredients. There were some unexpected surprises!

Let's Walk about Kitchener... then and now... growing up in downtown in the 50s, 60s & 70s

I went to three of the walks this year, and I liked this one the best. I found it a lot less preachy than the other two walks (the 7pm Saturday one on Kitchener at Night, and the Sunday at 2pm one on Walkable neighbourhoods). Katy was an excellent tour guide, too -- I learned a lot about the neighbourhoods around Victoria Park.

Thanks so much for the feedback! I really enjoyed myself too... it was great sharing a trip down memory lane.

I'm very happy to be back in the oldest neighbourhood in the city and would love to share some downtown urban living images with you... when I figure out how this image URL works! Help!

To insert an image I think you need the images hosted someplace else already. Then just wrap the URL in IMG tags. For example, here is UrbanWaterloo's avatar:

http://www.wonderfulwaterloo.com/image.php?u=2&dateline=1261637798

which has the following code:

I am sure the experts on the board can offer better advice than this.

Today's 4pm Downtown walk and talk about Inclusion was excellent. I'm planning to go to the Victoria Park walk at 11am Sunday Morning. Rych Mills is leading that one and he is an amazing source of local history.

It's too bad some the audio from these walks isn't recorded and posted for download somewhere after the fact. Although you'd miss out on the communal experience of the walks it would be nice to be able to take in more than 1 or 2 a year on one's own time. The audio could probably even be put to some sort of Google StreetView mash-up.

Agreed Pheidippides. I don't think organizers were expecting so many walks (17) this year as they mentioned only having a handful in 2012.

A dozen people attended our walk around Uptown Waterloo. It was a lot of fun, and hopefully we can organize one of Downtown Kitchener next year. It should be interesting to tour with both City Centre (http://www.wonderfulwaterloo.com/showthread.php?t=9) & 1Victoria (http://www.wonderfulwaterloo.com/showthread.php?t=1414) under construction.
