An additional 130,000 square feet of shopping and entertainment is coming to Conestoga Mall

Montreal, Quebec, (December, 2006) - Ivanhoe Cambridge, owner and manager of Conestoga Mall, is very pleased to announce an investment of $50 million to expand and renovate this shopping center of choice located in Waterloo, Ontario. Construction work on this highly anticipated project started in the spring and will be completed by fall, 2009.

George Fiddler, Senior Vice President, Central Region of Ivanhoe Cambridge, says, “We are very excited to redevelop Conestoga Mall, a project that is aligned with Ivanhoe Cambridge’s strategy of continuously reinvesting in its portfolio to further reinforce the position and profile of its properties in their respective markets. The renovation and expansion of Conestoga Mall will significantly enhance the operating environment for retailers, increase the convenience to customers and expand the retail and service offering in the north end of Waterloo.”

This project underlines the vitality of Conestoga Mall and confirms its status as a prime retail destination in its market. Once completed, the shopping centre will present a renewed retail and service offering in a contemporary, fresh and modern setting. The availability of a wide selection of high quality brand name retailers will strengthen the regional appeal of Conestoga Mall in the Waterloo Region.

Sandra Stone, General Manager of the property states: “This project is excellent news for Conestoga Mall, shoppers, the community and retailers! The mall is part of a thriving business and retail hub and as important members of the community; we want to contribute to the area’s vitality and growth. Renovation work will be planned in such a way as to minimize inconvenience to our tenants and to continue to provide a shopper-friendly environment to consumers.”

Details of the project include:

relocating CIBC to a 8,000 square-foot independent site on the property (scheduled opening is early January 2007),
a large 18,800 square-foot Old Navy that will be located in the space left vacant by CIBC and scheduled to open in late summer 2007,
an expanded The Bay which, once completed in spring 2008, will reach 130,000 square feet,
a major 75,000 square-foot expansion at the property's south end which uses some of the space left vacant by The Bay, features a ‘race track design' which will link the new wing to the Zehrs wing and house high-quality, new retail concepts,
relocating and redesigning a new contemporary food court that will feature ten food retailers with seating for 700,
New, well-equipped, stylish washrooms,
Over 1,000 new parking spaces will be added to an expanded, pedestrian-friendly south end parking lot.

Moreover, the expansive interior will showcase dramatic 25 foot high ceilings, a clear storey roof over the food court, fashionable interior design and well positioned lighting elements. The stunning combination of stone, glass and stucco exterior will present an exciting street façade that will make the community proud. The existing building will have fresh new flooring, lighting & skylight upgrades, modern interior décor / furnishings, attractive outdoor landscaping and new design elements incorporated into the King Street main entrance.

This project will be led by general contractor Ledcor Construction of Toronto and is expected to create 130 construction jobs, with 235 full-time and 155 part-time new retail employment positions being added to the region when complete.

I don't believe there will be a separate entrance to H&M from outside. It looks like there will be large windows though for big marketing displays fronting the King Street parking lot.

It's too bad there isn't. But then again, I guess the whole point of a mall is to get people inside for one store and then hope they shop at other stores.

This was such a nice mall back in the 1980's to 90's. A design classic. Now it looks like they've ruined it.:( (The black brick looks okay--did they redo entire facade on all sides? And sure there's more shops. But so sad to see the classic 1970's design decimated.)

While I can't comment on what it looked like back then, the interior now is MUCH nicer than it was before.

I like the exterior, but the inside of Shoppers (opened January 28th) leaves much to be desired.

I don't mind the new Shoppers store. When I heard they were relocating in the mall, I thought the store would be re-branded as either a small "Shoppers Simply Pharmacy" or a Murale (cosmetics) store. There was no space in the mall to move to a 18,000 S.F. new format drugstore. It remained a Shoppers and obviously, a little smaller than the previous location. I think its better for seniors who don't really like the new huge stores, and really close to the entrances.

I have heard rumours that a new Shoppers will open in the Waterloo SmartCentres site, across from the Wal-Mart, so maybe this is why the Shoppers at Conestoga significantly downsized and didn't go to the new huge store to avoid being within such close proximity to the SmartCentres site. Either way, I'm glad Shoppers decided to stay in the mall and keep the in store post office. Conestoga needs more specialty stores (like pharmacies, photography, entertainment, more formal/specialty clothing stores). I think they are quite saturated for stores that cater to 18-year old girls. They don't need anymore of those types of stores!

One thing I would like to see open at Conestoga is a currency exchange. I don't think there is a currency exchange business in North Waterloo at all!

UrbanWaterloo

I hear what you're saying and I'm glad Shoppers stayed at the mall too. I just didn't get that "new" feeling while walking around the inside - it probably would have helped if they raised the ceiling. The points you make about targeting a senior's crowd are bang-on, except the mall has a case of split-personalities then (ie. how large parts are now more youthful - example being the new food court). Agreed there are an abundance of shops for teenage girls, and not enough to draw young modern professional males in (Uptown has the latter market covered more extensively).

Currency Exchange: Is that just cause you wanted to get your hands on an Aussie bill quickly to see what our new currency (http://www.theglobeandmail.com/news/national/budget/some-change-for-a-dollar-money-you-can-launder/article1490583/) will look like? :p

A large permanent kiosk for Mac Sushi (sushi bar) has now been assembled in the food court, however, it is not open for business yet. It looks as if a few more fixtures need to be put together, but it will probably be open by the weekend.

The hoarding is also down from H&M for their Grand Opening tomorrow, as well as for the new Blacks store.

S.V. 10-09, Conestoga Mall (H & M Store) (fascia sign), 550 King Street North

as contained in the “Recommendation” Sections set forth in Development Services Report DS2010-021, dated April 16, 2010.”

Executive Summary

The Sign Variance Committee met on Tuesday, April 13, 2010 to consider the following applications:

S.V. 10-09 Conestoga Mall (H & M Store), 550 King Street North (Northeast Ward)
The applicant is proposing an illuminated fascia sign to be located on the west elevation facing King Street North. The variance is required as the Sign By-law requires that a fascia sign be located on the face of the building deemed to be the front of the unit. The unit is separated by an interior corridor and does not have a direct entrance to the exterior building facade. The Committee is recommending approval of this sign subject to conditions.

Traditionally that Coles space has been used as a staging area for tenants while their new space is being renovated. I can't see HandMaiden sticking around for very long though.

They are using the former Coles space for what's known as temporary in-line (http://www2.icleasing.ca/en/SpecialtyTils.aspx) CRU leasing. These leases only usually last a couple of months and basically just use the leftover fixtures and furnishings from the last tenant.

In 2009, Conestoga Mall was due for an expansion. By adding destination retailers, new restaurants and customer service facilities, the mall was able to meet the needs of Waterloo’s ever-growing population. The addition of a brand new food court adjacent to the cinemas allowed for greater synergy between the Centre and entertainment facilities. Once considered tired and dated, the Conestoga Mall was completely refurbished to reflect a new contemporary, chic shopping enviornment.
