I was thrilled to see that Eleventh Hour kept their Uptown location. I assumed when they opened the Conestoga store that the Uptown location would close for sure.

LOL, sorry it's still a list in progress. I like how you're throwing in the address, eventually we'll do that for all the boutiques.
As for Loop itself: I can see why it's popular, and I love part of their marketing campaign (doing chalk drawings on the sidewalk in Uptown). However for me personally, I stop in often but leave empty handed because I find their clothes are a bit too grunge/street-like, whereas I prefer more club/preppy.

Now this is a store I love to shop at: have a few Karv's (one of my favourite brands) from here!

Another one of my favourites is Meltdown (http://www.meltdownonline.com/) by King and Wellington and their Sneaker store SoHo (http://www.sohosneakershop.com/) in Uptown.
A couple other good local clothing stores are - Andies in Uptown, Kid Kouture (http://www.kidkouture.ca/), and The Jump Off hip hop clothing in Market Square - not that I really shop at these though, but I know a lot of people that do.

Thanks for the additions. Put them all up at the top except Kid Kouture, which I feel is different than the others and could fit better in a "Children's Stores" thread.

Popped into Gloss today, and was surprised to learn they're moving to Downtown Kitchener (apparently there are not enough good spots Uptown, and the rent is getting too expensive). Specifically to Cadence's old spot @ 87 King Street West, where they'll also be adding a salon. Now there's lots of things I like about Downtown, but clothing selection has not been one of them. That said, it looks like I'll now start shopping for apparel downtown again.

I was wondering what was going to be there. They had workers in there yesterday. I wish they were taking advantage of the facade grant program for this one.
It would be a better spot also. I always thought Gloss was in a weird spot. Kinda hidden in this old dark building

Yikes good luck with that. It will be an uphill battle for them. Uptown rent is more expensive for a reason, not to mention that Gloss charges premium for their product.

I wouldn't say an uphill battle. I think their customer base is pretty solid right now and they won't mind going to Kitchener to shop. The way you put it, it makes it sound like they're moving to the ghetto.

Ya a welcome addition. And you're right, as of right now downtown and uptown don't attract the same client base. But I think enough of their clients will travel from Waterloo to Kitchener to check things out. Plus hopefully gain some clients from downtown.
Keepers will be re-opening under new management soon also. The place has been empty for a couple weeks now.
I think Caesars Closet is going to very well when it opens. The way they do there sales beats everything in Uptown.

Caesars Closet does do a lot of sales, which I think will help make them very popular Uptown when they open.
I like a lot of the name brands these stores carry but the prices are just to much for my stingy ways. Have bought things from Casears in Cambridge in the past during one of their sales though. Just got back from Woodbury Commons just outside of New York. Superdry, Diesel, GStar, Puma.... all 50% off. That's my mecca!!!

I've only been once, a long time ago. I recently was was walking past there and checked things out but as you can see by UrbanWaterloo's pictures, it's still closed for the season. It doesn't have a great "people watching" location like the patios on King Street, but it reminds me of some of the bars, pubs and patios in Toronto. The ones that are converted homes.

Athletic Direct puts its best foot forward in tough retail environment
May 12, 2010
BY FRANCES BARRICK, RECORD STAFF
KITCHENER – For more than 30 years, Nigel Strothard has been selling shoes in downtown Kitchener, surviving in a troubled core that is slowly evolving.
“It’s tough. It is a very tough place to have a business,” says Strothard, owner of Athletic Direct in Market Square at the corner of King and Frederick streets. “But there is a light at the end of the tunnel.”
This independent store is marking its 20th year of operation, the last 10 at Market Square. Previously, it was located in the King Centre, across from Kitchener City Hall. The store had to leave the former shopping centre after Manulife Financial bought the building and started converting it to office space.
Strothard has been selling footwear in Kitchener’s downtown since the mid 1970s, originally with The Athlete’s Foot, a chain that went bankrupt in 1990.
The Waterloo resident has seen the downtown change from a bustling core filled with shoppers to a struggling retail area following the departure of anchor stores, such as Eatons. He says the move of social service agencies to the core deters some shoppers because they draw a lot of street people to the area.
But he wouldn’t want his store to be located anywhere else. He doesn’t like large, suburban malls, saying they are too artificial and all look the same.
“I don’t think I would fit in there,” he says.
This from a man who rides his bike to work throughout the year, and also wears shorts year-round. He prefers his nickname Nigel, rather than his Christian name Jim. “There are so many Jims in the world” he explains.
Strothard came to Waterloo Region from Toronto in 1968 to attend the University of Waterloo and ended up staying. He studied psychology, but quit before graduating because he was no longer interested in the course.
He drifted for a few years, doing different jobs, including working as a baker in Kitchener.
A runner from his school days in Toronto, Strothard says he was a member of a local running club when there was a “running boom” in the 1970s. He got a job at The Athlete’s Foot store in downtown Kitchener, the chain’s first in Canada, in 1979 and later became store manager.
After the store closed, he was hired by Athletic Direct. In 1992, a year after it opened, he bought the business with a partner. He bought out his partner in 1996.
Last December, the store relocated within Market Square, moving across the hall to make room for Trios College, a private career college that opened its doors last month after moving from a plaza at King and Victoria streets.
Strothard sells more than 4,000 shoes a year, with Converse shoes being his top seller. He says he has the best local selection of these shoes, affectionately known as Chucks. He also sells athletic clothing and footwear for young children.
Most of his shoppers are repeat customers and he believes his personalized attention and knowledge of shoes keeps people coming back.
“We definitely have children of our customers now coming,” he says.
Students of Trios College are starting to trickle in, but Strothard says he would have preferred it to see retailers move into empty space in Market Square. Market Square is mostly filled by offices, including The Record.
Strothard says he is beginning to see positive changes in the core, such as the campus the University of Waterloo and Wilfrid Laurier University have opened and plans for 385 condominiums to be built next to city hall.
“The more people you have living downtown, the more it will be able to support businesses,” Strothard says. “It is taking time. It is a long corner to turn, but it is coming.”

The brick is beyond restoration. Sandblasting would further destroy the clay brick which are already crumbling... The stone is one option that will really clean up the look. I prefer the brick too, but have had no luck finding a brick company willing or able to do the work required to bring it back. The City of Kitchener Facade program has certain criteria for what they will cover. The City really liked the stonework by the way.

So will it look just like the above picture? Keeping the bay window or will you replace the window as well?

I hope it will look even better, that was done up in a photo editing program, the actual stone veneer should look much nicer in real life. The bay window will be refinished and the entrance will be brighter once a new exterior light is installed. The transformation inside is incredible and its not entirely finished so I hope people will be patient and appreciate the hard work that has gone into so far.

glossgirl

I see familiar faces everyday. I find the traffic much improved and that's quite impressive. I'd have to say that 25 % of my traffic flow is established customers and the rest is all new and that gives me plenty to smile about. The existing clientele love the new space, the only drawback for some is the added distance for them to travel. Its really not that far when you think about it or mapquest it... 3.15 km or 4 minutes travel time.

Unfortunately these historically brick buildings aren't all that restorable, and IMO aren't always worth restoring. Downtown Kitchener is a beautiful place with a great deal of historical value, but lets face it - at some point or another we're going to have to modernize some things. The location that Gloss has chosen wasn't taken care of very well especially on the facade. It has required a great deal of pain staking work and financial input at this point to bring the interior to where it is. Several contractors have looked at the brick work and offered some different solutions, none of them able to bring the brick back. The decision then was to either go cheap and paint it or do something nice and a bit more pricey to try and really add to the new face of downtown Kitchener while at the same time attract the attention of the consumer.
I understand that the style may not suit every persons eye, but it is an honorable attempt to keep up with the fresh new look of Downtown Kitchener and maintaining that Gloss style!

Did the city push for replacing the bay window with the facade program? In their documentation they say that they don't like it at all.
glossgirl
06-03-2010, 09:32 AM
Not at all, I haven't heard a thing about the bay window, which is actually quite beautiful and distinctive. The bevelled glass that goes into each section is quite expensive and with proper care of the wood I believe it to be a great focal point. What documentation from the City are you talking about?
Spokes
06-03-2010, 09:44 AM
Their papers regarding the facade restoration program, and what they want for specific sites. The city centre district is here - http://www.kitchener.ca/pdf/downtown_facade_city_centre_district_site_specific _rec_p20-53.pdf (Also a thread here (http://www.wonderfulwaterloo.com/showthread.php/91-King-Street-Faade-Guidelines))
In the document (p 9) it says for your store:
Repair and paint upper cornice.
Modernize storefront by eliminating the bay window and replacing it with one large casement window.
Sandblast or repaint lower columns.
Raise the height of the windows by minimizing the size of the sign. Signage should fit between lower columns.
I was just curious if those were things they had pushed for.
It's interesting, they've got some really good ideas in there (and the other docs) some of which we can actually see evidence of implementation.
glossgirl
06-03-2010, 10:07 AM
Nope, haven't heard anything like that from them. Like I said they are all for the stonework, they wanted me to take my sign design to the next level. I am dropping off my application today as a matter of fact, so up until now it was just a meeting with Cory Bluhm.

Acrylic is not good enough, I was gonna do a banner wrapped aluminum frame which would have been awesome but they want three dimensional. so i have got a quote for 5 inches pin mounted off of the sign and the background actually carved into the sign for a true three dimensional sign.

That will look good. I'm glad the facade is getting re-done.
Also I think it was a smart move to open shop in downtown, due to the lack of stores of that nature in downtown. Uptown has a lot and and they just added Caesars Closet.

Gloss Grand Opening - June 17, 2010
Great Party! I got there kind of late so I missed the fashion show, but I was told these will become regular events which is nice to hear. The store has a real urban feel, which I think perfectly suits their target customers. Lots of free goodies from alcohol to snacks to cookies that The 41Gastropub dropped off: there seems to be a real friendly neighbour feeling going on. I definitely plan to be a regular customer, although I hope Rebecca doesn't hate me 'cause I tend to be a cheap "shop the sales rack" kind of customer (but in all fairness I do that everywhere! :p).

I love this Ben Sherman (www.bensherman.com) shirt! (Looks much better in person as this is not the best photo.)

I picked up this Station 8 (www.station8clothing.com) shirt for $40 tax included. :D (Again not sure what was up with my camera that night but it looks better in person I find. Probably it's just clothes are meant to be worn rather than hang on racks.)

Stopped by Gloss tonight for the first time. Not only was I really impressed with the store and what they've done with it, and their clothes, but they're so nice too!!

I've seen brick in worse condition restored--in Montreal, Toronto and Vancouver. I think it came down to the owner's idea of what is "tasteful." I don't agree with their aesthetic.

Im sure some of it comes down to working with the city since Im assuming this is being done with the help of the city's facade grant program

Over on UrbanToronto an article was posted saying that American Apparel may not have enough cash to last the rest of the year:

Ya it's been on the news now for awhile about the company heading into bankruptcy. That doesn't always mean the stores will close, but that they will need to figure out financing.
The fact that the store has all stupid 80's clothes probably is one of the reasons for this :).

Ya corporate retail and bankruptcy is a funny game. Petcetera went bankrupt, got rid of their creditors and are back in business. Was closed for maybe 1 month. Maintained their most profitable/strategic locations.

Indeed, it seems that bankruptcy these days is less and less about shutting the doors and boarding up the windows. More like streamlining and shedding operations that aren't making you any money.
Hopefully AA will stick around, as they were one of the first "big names" in clothing to call Uptown home.

As I understand it:
Chapter 11 Bankruptcy allows companies to shed assets in order to become profitable again and pay back their creditors (and also allows the company to break union commitments). This is a corporate re-organization, the company will still exist after it comes out of brankruptcy.
Chapter 7 Bankruptcy is the complete liquidation of all company assets in order to pay the creditors. The company ceases to exist after a chapter 7 bankruptcy.

Speaking of bankruptcy - when did Just Between Us in Waterloo put up shutters and slink off into the night?
Couple weeks ago I think. Kind of disappointing, but hopefully the spot gets snatched up quickly.

Caesars Closet had a renovation sale awhile back but they now closed the original Cambridge location :-(
Guessing they can't afford to keep both locations open. Quite a disappointment.

Generously donated is a common figure of speech. If you Google "generously donated" you will see it in many sites and articles that relate to charity donations. Sure it's a 'feel good' phrase for those donating, but I'm quite sure there was no disrespect intended. :D

Taya, a women's clothing store with their original location in St. Jacobs (http://www.stjacobs.com/html/retailers_q.html), has opened a 2nd location in Downtown Kitchener @ 157 King Street West. Speaking to the owner she seemed very upbeat on the revitalization taking place downtown, in particular the Mayfair Hotel redevelopment (http://www.wonderfulwaterloo.com/showthread.php?t=1163) directly across the street. She's planning to take part in the Façade Improvement Grant Program (http://www.wonderfulwaterloo.com/showthread.php?t=91), although that's still a few months away. I wish her the best of luck!
