The Region of Waterloo will launch the Central Transit Corridor Community Building Strategy with two public events: the official launch on March 24 and the first public open house and workshop on March 27. The Community Building Strategy is the next step in the process of planning for development along the corridor and within rapid transit station areas.

Join us for the official launch!

1010

Join us for the official launch of the Central Transit Corridor Community Building Strategy on March 24 from 2 to 5 p.m. in Council Chambers at 150 Frederick St., Kitchener.

Participants will have an opportunity to listen and learn about what rapid transit means for the community and how the development of the Central Transit Corridor will shape the future of growth in the region.

Speakers at the launch event will include: the Region's Commissioner of Planning, Housing and Community Services, Rob Horne, who will talk about the ongoing global transformation of our region; guest speakers from the community who will share their views on the project and its community building aspects; and members of the Region's consulting team from Urban Strategies who will outline the process for the strategy and the different opportunities for public input.

Then join the conversation!

1011

Add your voice to the discussion at the first public open house and workshop on March 27 from 3 to 8 p.m. at Knox Presbyterian Church at 50 Erb St. W., Waterloo.

Participants at this hands-on event will work together to help shape the vision and principles for the Central Transit Corridor Community Building Strategy. The Strategy is a 10-month planning process that will examine the relationship between the Central Transit Corridor and the region's cities and neighbourhoods. It will also help identify the initiatives and investments needed to support rapid transit, as well as the community benefits that will come with it.

Region invites public to provide input through speaker event, open house and new storefront location
April 19, 2012 | Region of Waterloo | Link (http://www.regionofwaterloo.ca/en/newslist/index.aspx?corpId=58cynQlfgqiAYQyTLmpurQeQuAleQuAl&newsId=OCMWolwPvRYmPlUsmJyqwOk5geQuAleQuAl)

The Region is inviting the public to provide input on the future of our community through a speaker event, open house and a newly opened storefront location – all part of the Central Transit Corridor Community Building Strategy.

The Region will first welcome Dr. Steven Cassidy, Director at MRC McLean Hazel and MRC Europe as a keynote speaker for its first in a series of speaker events. The event, on April 24 at the Lang Tannery event space, will focus on enhancing mobility within the Central Transit Corridor and looking at strategies to make it easier to walk, bike, take transit and drive to key destinations. Doors open at 6:30 p.m. and the presentation will begin at 7 p.m. The event is free, and the public is asked to register at www.centraltransitcorridor.ca.

A Community Open House on April 26 from 3 to 7 p.m. will follow with an opportunity for the public to provide their input on enhancing mobility in the corridor. The open house will be held at a new storefront location at 220 King St. W. in Kitchener. The Storefront will provide information and meeting space for the Central Transit Corridor Community Building Strategy.

The Central Transit Corridor Community Building Strategy is about exploring the potential of the Region’s future rapid transit system to provide enhanced mobility, place making, reurbanization, and strengthened communities throughout and along the Corridor.

The full consultation plan for the Community Building Strategy includes open house events, dialogue forums, stakeholder working sessions, online feedback opportunities and a project storefront. The storefront is the ‘home’ for the project. It will be used for outreach events, public drop-ins, and will showcase the visual materials produced through the process. This space offers visitors an opportunity to find more information about the Community Building Strategy, and speak to someone on the project team during scheduled events and drop in hours.

Regular open hours will be Tuesdays 9 a.m. to 1 p.m., Thursdays 12 p.m. to 5 p.m., and Fridays 12 p.m. to 4 p.m. Please come out and visit the storefront to have a chance to learn more about the Community Building Strategy and tell us what Rapid Transit means for your community!

Community invited to comment on Region’s DRAFT Community Building Strategy
Region of Waterloo | Link (http://www.regionofwaterloo.ca/en/newslist/index.aspx)

The Region of Waterloo invites the community to attend a series of public open houses to review and comment on the DRAFT Community Building Strategy (CBS).

The Strategy has been prepared over the last year in partnership with the cities of Cambridge, Kitchener and Waterloo with input from stakeholders and community members. It is a flexible framework that will guide detailed station area planning to help shape how our community will be planned and built around future rapid transit stations and throughout the Central Transit Corridor.

Included in the document are: a more focused vision for the Central Transit Corridor and how it will grow and change as the Region’s rapid transit system is implemented; snapshots of the rapid transit station areas that highlight current conditions and how each station could influence the surrounding community; 69 place-specific initiatives where unique opportunities exist for investment and development; and recommended steps for implementing the Community Building Strategy.

The open houses will take place between 4 and 7 p.m., with a presentation at 5 p.m. and roundtable discussions at 5:30 p.m.:

I like their Hespeler Road model. I've been suggesting they do that with the Cambridge Centre lands for ages.

A great video that the team put together, including animations for the projected station-area developments:

The animations for the transformations of Hespeler Rd, Fairway Rd and Charles/Cedar are drool-worthy. Id love to see any or all of that come to fruition. How can it happen though? Zoning changes and then hope for the best?

Zoning changes and wait for the property to start changing hands. Can-Amera to Dunbar is ripe for redevelopment, and the Super 8 property at Hespeler Road and Eagle is up for sale; someone could buy that, the gas station lot, and the used car dealership next door and build something superb. I'm sure the developments will come in time; some of those strip malls have had a lot of turnover.
