KITCHENER — A former public works yard on Bramm Street will become the centre of an “innovation district” with the potential to create 15,000 jobs and attract 4,000 residents within a five-minute walk of King and Victoria streets.
This is one of the key parts of a new economic development strategy that city councillors will consider on Monday.
Rod Regier, the city’s head of economic development, calls the innovation district a game changer that will more than double the number of people working downtown and attract private-sector investment in offices and multi-residential buildings.
The innovation district is the result of the provincial Liberals’ move to extend GO Train service to Kitchener and the region’s move to build light rail transit.
At King and Victoria streets the region plans to build a large transit station for GO Trains, light rail transit, VIA Rail, Greyhound and Grand River Transit. The trains could quickly bring people from Toronto to work in the innovation district.
