Dear Melinda,

One story which I think would benefit your readers greatly is an investigation into making our region more cycling-friendly. Consistently, surveys conducted throughout North America conclude that 80-85% of all households possess at least one working bicycle, and that up to 60% of people express a desire to get out and cycle more often. This collective desire is articulated in a variety of ways: concerns about our impact on the climate, concerns about personal health and the health of our children, or an overall desire to cycle because it is a pleasurable form of recreation (to name just a few). Yet, despite these numbers which suggest a latent cycling culture is just waiting to burst forth, less than 2% of people in the region cycle as a form of transit. It is my hope that you will consider undertaking a story on why this massive gap between our desires and our reality exists, as well as some potential solutions for closing that gap.
