Hello Everyone,
I spent some time today trying to put together a map locating the current/future developments in KW and a few in Cambridge as I don't know Cambridge as well as Id like. Anyways if this is a good idea I can continue to update it as time goes on. I uploaded the image as a bmp on photobucket, but it seems that the picture was converted to .jpg unfortunatly so the quality is terrible when enlarged.
Let me know

Great idea Leaffan!!
I wonder if there's not a way to do it on google maps so that you can zoom in on it?

That would be amazing but I am not sure if they do that or not. I tried .GIF format and it seems to be a little better since photobucket didn't convert the format.

Awesome idea setting up a map! I too wonder if we could post the developments on google maps, and when you click on each project it would have a link to it's corresponding thread on the forum. I also wonder if there's some kind of software modification (http://www.vbulletin.org/forum/forumdisplay.php?f=245&order=desc) which would allow a google-type (mapquest, etc..) map to be posted directly on WW.
How big is the original file, or at what compression point is it still legible? I'm thinking of the above solution doesn't work, we could host the image directly here on WW.

You can do it on Google Maps. If you have a Google account, just sign in and go to "create map." Go to the spot there's a development and create a shape on that development. You can then put a description right on it - including a link to the thread.
You can then make it editable by others if you want as well.
Then Im not sure if you can embed it right into a thread. You may have to use an external link to access it.

the BMP file is 34.8MB so it is pretty huge. Maybe sometime next week I can work on a google map version, something that is online and is easy to update. Some projects come and go so fast, like this morning I just learned there is a new office underconstruction on Regina st in uptown Waterloo. But if its ok with you we could put the original picture up until the new one is made.

Unfortunately 34mb would eat too much bandwidth. If you can shink it smaller and still be legible that would be great, or send it over and we can try to do something: contact@wonderfulwaterloo.com

Well I have made basically the same map over again with google maps. I have the settings on private so only members from the forum will know the URL. I can update if there are any errors or other developments that need to be added. I would really like to see someone that knows the Cambridge scene better to make a map of the projects there. I hope to incorporate pictures or renders to the map at a later date. I am hoping we can continually update this interactive map as time goes on.
I would appreciate feedback.

Looks good!
If you want to make it like your other map, with shapes that are the actual shape of the development, you can create shapes on your google map. The way you made those points on the map, theres an option to create shapes. Just an idea if thats what you were going for, (based on your first map)

There are no plans to my knowledge. I think a lot of it has to do with the decline in sales for those particular companies. Chrysler and GM haven't been doing too well as you can imagine. Those dealerships just happen to all be located next to each other.
I know...it looks really bad. And there's a lot of industrial buildings up for lease too, all around the city. I hope this goes away along with the recession, but we'll see. Cambridge needs to move beyond its old (blue-collar) economic model, that's for sure.

There was a model for the lot proposed by the School of Architecture students (I think) but nothing official.
I wouldn't stop with Dunbar to Can-Amera though. I would have Cambridge Centre build parking structures behind The Bay and Zellers, have the laneway in front of the mall made a proper street (maybe adjust Collier-MacMillan to make it all one road), and have everything between Bishop and Dunbar excavated and rezoned for reuse. Imagine the possibilities with a strip of land that size.

I think that unless there is a way of selectively hiding them, it would add a lot of clutter and confusion to an already full map. Some sights may even have several tags if different proposals have been approved, then cancelled, and then another approved on the same site.

True, but whoever currently owns the land paid for someone to design a detailed concept and rendering for a potential development on the property, so I still think we should say there is at least something proposed for the site. What it ends up being is unclear.
